Student Visa (Subclass 500)

Planning to study in Australia? The Student Visa Subclass 500 is your gateway to pursuing world-class education while experiencing a multicultural lifestyle. At SNS Consulting Group, we guide you through every step of the student visa process to ensure a smooth and successful application.

What is Student Visa Subclass 500?

The Subclass 500 visa allows international students to live, study, and work in Australia for up to 5 years, depending on the type and duration of the chosen course. In some cases—especially for younger students or specific education sectors—the stay may vary. For instance, primary school students are generally granted a visa for up to 3 years.

What You Can Do With This Visa:

  • Enroll in eligible full-time study programs registered with CRICOS

  • Travel freely in and out of Australia during the visa validity

  • Work up to 40 hours per fortnight (while studying)

  • Work unlimited hours during designated breaks or in specific sectors as approved

Who Is Eligible?

To apply for a Subclass 500 student visa, you must meet several criteria, including but not limited to:

  • Age Requirement: School-level applicants must meet age-related guidelines

    • Year 9: Under 17

    • Year 10: Under 18

    • Year 11: Under 19

    • Year 12: Under 20

  • Enrolment Confirmation: You need to provide a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for a full-time CRICOS-registered course. If applying from within Australia, a Letter of Offer may suffice temporarily but must be followed up with a CoE before approval.

  • Financial Capability: Depending on your home country, you may need to demonstrate sufficient financial resources to cover tuition, living expenses, and travel.

  • English Proficiency: Proof of English language skills through tests like PTE, IELTS, or equivalent. SNS Consulting Group can help you prepare for these exams.

  • Health Insurance: You and any dependents must hold an Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the entire duration of your stay.

  • Welfare Arrangements: If you’re under 18, proper guardianship and welfare support arrangements must be in place.

  • Health & Character Requirements: Meet the Australian government’s medical and background checks.

  • Visa History & Validity: If applying from inside Australia, you must hold an eligible substantive visa, or apply within the permitted 28-day grace period if transitioning from a special-purpose or expired visa.

Visa Costs

  • Primary applicant: AUD 1,600

  • Each dependent (under or over 18): AUD 1,190

For students affected by COVID-19 disruptions, some applications may be eligible for a fee waiver or extension depending on individual circumstances.

Extending Your Stay

If your course continues beyond your current visa or if your visa is set to expire before graduation, you may:

  • Apply for a new Student Visa

  • Apply for a Visitor Visa (Subclass 600), supported by a letter from your education provider indicating your graduation timeline

  • Consider a Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) if you have completed eligible qualifications within the past 6 months
